Utagawa Kuniyoshi was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period.
He showed his unique talent in a variety of subjects, including samurai paintings, manga and landscape paintings.
His samurai paintings, especially those with vivid composition and peculiar ideas, were popular and captured many readers. He also created many humorous works that personified animals such as cats and goldfish, as well as some carefully designed riddles.
It is said that his free-spirited creative concepts and powerful depiction skills influenced later manga and animation. He is ranked as one of the most representative artists in the Ukiyo-e world in the late Edo period, along with Hokusai Katsushika and Hiroshige Utagawa.
